AMYL
Amylase is the starch-digesting enzyme, historically measured to investigate pancreatitis. It is now regarded as a poor test for that purpose — too many non-pancreatic sources and too easily raised by kidney disease — and it has been largely superseded by pancreatic lipase immunoreactivity.
Amylase breaks dietary starch into sugars. Like lipase, much of it comes from the pancreas, and for decades the two were measured together as the standard blood work-up for pancreatitis. Modern veterinary practice has moved on, and it is worth understanding why — because amylase still appears on many chemistry panels and is easily over-interpreted.

Amylase has two disqualifying weaknesses:
On top of that, its sensitivity is unimpressive: dogs and cats with confirmed pancreatitis frequently have normal amylase. Notably, cats with pancreatitis often show no amylase rise whatsoever, which is why the test is considered near-useless in that species.
A raised amylase should prompt the question "is this the kidneys?" before anything else — check creatinine, SDMA and urine concentration. Other considerations include gastrointestinal disease and, occasionally, steroid treatment. If pancreatitis is genuinely suspected, the right response is not to act on the amylase but to run pancreatic lipase immunoreactivity and image the abdomen.
A normal amylase carries little reassurance about the pancreas, given how often confirmed pancreatitis occurs with a normal value. It is not a meaningful rule-out test.
Amylase has essentially no role in monitoring pancreatic disease. Where a pancreatitis patient is being followed, pancreatic lipase immunoreactivity, clinical signs and imaging do the work. Amylase's main modern relevance is as a legacy number on panels that should be interpreted with appropriate scepticism.
The limitations apply to both species but are most extreme in cats, where amylase is regarded as having essentially no diagnostic value for pancreatitis. In dogs it is marginally more informative but still substantially outperformed by the specific assays. In both, kidney disease is the leading cause of an unexpectedly high amylase.

For orientation only, one published example: Cornell University's veterinary laboratory reports amylase of roughly 322–1310 U/L in dogs and 603–2183 U/L in cats. Even then the number is a weak guide — in dogs amylase generally has to at least double (often reach 7–10× the top of the range) before it is taken seriously, and in cats it barely moves even with pancreatitis. Your own report's range is what counts, read alongside kidney values.
Treat a raised amylase as a weak signal that most often reflects reduced kidney clearance rather than pancreatic disease. Check kidney values first. If the clinical picture suggests pancreatitis, ask your vet about pancreatic lipase immunoreactivity and abdominal ultrasound — the tests that actually answer the question. Amylase is best understood today as a historical artefact of the chemistry panel rather than a decision-making number.
