Emerging blood screens that flag cancer to investigate — never to diagnose.
This is the newest and most carefully-framed corner of the library. There is no single blood test that diagnoses cancer, but a new generation of screening assays can flag apparently-healthy pets who warrant a closer look — the beginnings of "liquid biopsy" in veterinary medicine.
Nu.Q measures circulating nucleosomes — DNA fragments shed by cancer cells — as a screen for systemic cancers such as lymphoma and haemangiosarcoma in dogs. Markers like it sit in the library's frontier layer on purpose: they are real and research-backed, but they lack a simple validated reference band, are read on lab-specific cut-offs, and can be lifted by inflammation as well as cancer.
The honest-copy rule binds hardest here. These tests raise a question, they do not answer one: a raised result is a prompt for imaging and, where indicated, biopsy — the tests that actually make a diagnosis — not a verdict in itself. Read as trends within ongoing wellness monitoring, they aim to catch cancer earlier; used as diagnoses, they would badly mislead. Everything in this panel is a flag for vigilance, confirmed by the vet.

TK1 is an enzyme released by rapidly dividing cells, so a raised serum level flags high cell turnover. Paired with CRP it forms a screening index used to look for occult cancer in apparently-healthy dogs — but it is read on lab-specific cut-offs, and it signals proliferation, never a diagnosis.
