CRP is a protein that rises quickly with inflammation anywhere in the body and falls as it settles, which makes it an excellent way to track whether an inflammatory process is improving. CRP is the dog's main inflammatory marker — cats use serum amyloid A instead.
CRP (C-reactive protein) is a "major acute-phase protein" — one the liver pumps out rapidly in response to inflammation almost anywhere in the body. Its two most useful qualities are speed and reversibility: it climbs within a day of an inflammatory insult and falls just as promptly when the process resolves. That dynamic behaviour makes CRP less a diagnostic pinpoint and more a thermometer for inflammation — brilliant for tracking whether something is getting better or worse.

The trade-off for that sensitivity is that CRP is non-specific: it tells you inflammation is present and how intense it is, not where or why.
A raised CRP signals active, systemic inflammation — from infection, immune-mediated disease, tissue injury, surgery, pancreatitis, or (at lower levels) some cancers. Because so many things raise it, a high CRP rarely points to a single diagnosis; its value is in quantifying the inflammation and, above all, in following it over time. A CRP that is falling day by day is strong, objective evidence that a treatment (an antibiotic, an anti-inflammatory, drainage of an abscess) is working; one that plateaus or climbs suggests the problem is not yet controlled. This makes it one of the most practical markers for managing an inflammatory illness.
The height can also help gauge severity and, in some settings, prognosis — a very high CRP flags a more intense process warranting closer attention.
A low or normal CRP is reassuring against significant active inflammation. Because CRP responds so quickly, a normal value in an unwell dog is a useful piece of evidence steering away from a major inflammatory or infectious cause — though very early or very localised inflammation can occasionally sit below the threshold, so it is read with the clinical picture and the white cell count.
CRP shines in monitoring chronic and relapsing inflammatory conditions — immune-mediated diseases, chronic infections, inflammatory bowel disease — where its trend tracks flares and remissions and helps judge whether treatment can be tapered. Followed serially, it turns "the dog seems a bit brighter" into an objective number, which is exactly what a longitudinal record is built to capture.
This is a marker defined by species. CRP is the dog's principal acute-phase protein and is not reliable in cats — the feline equivalent is serum amyloid A, which does the same job for cats. So a CRP result belongs to a dog; for a cat, look to SAA instead. This split is why the immune panel branches by species.
CRP is measured from a blood sample, reported in mg/L. No special preparation is needed, and results are available quickly, which suits its use for serial monitoring. Read the value against your own report's range and, most importantly, watch its trend across samples.
A high CRP is a prompt to find and treat the source of inflammation, guided by the clinical picture and the rest of the panel — and then to recheck CRP to confirm the treatment is working. Its greatest value is as a tracking number: falling CRP is reassuring, stubbornly high CRP says keep looking.
Reference ranges reflect conventional laboratory intervals. Always interpret against your own lab's printed range and your veterinary surgeon's judgement. A brighter optimal band is shown only where a published guideline defines one, and it is cited.
