Serum amyloid A is the cat's main inflammatory marker — the feline counterpart to CRP in dogs. It rises sharply with inflammation and falls as it resolves, so its trajectory is an excellent way to tell whether an inflammatory process is settling.
Serum amyloid A (SAA) is the cat's principal "major acute-phase protein" — the feline equivalent of the dog's CRP. When there is inflammation anywhere in the body, the liver releases SAA rapidly, so it climbs within a day and, crucially, falls promptly once the process resolves. That fast-up, fast-down behaviour makes it a sensitive tracker of inflammation rather than a specific diagnosis.

SAA exists as a separate feline marker for a specific reason: CRP does not perform reliably in cats, so the cat needs its own acute-phase protein — and SAA is remarkably responsive, often rising to a striking degree with inflammation.
A raised SAA signals active, systemic inflammation — from infection, immune-mediated disease, injury, surgery, pancreatitis, or some cancers. Like CRP in dogs, it does not say where the inflammation is, only that it is present and how intense. Its power is in quantifying and following the process: because feline SAA can rise sharply and fall quickly, a declining SAA over a couple of days is strong, objective evidence that treatment is working, while a persistently high value says the problem is not yet controlled. It is a particularly useful, sensitive early flag that a cat — often a stoic patient — is genuinely unwell.
A low or normal SAA is reassuring against significant active inflammation, and in an off-colour cat a normal value is a useful steer away from a major inflammatory or infectious cause. As with any acute-phase protein, very early or very localised inflammation can occasionally sit below the threshold, so it is read alongside the clinical picture and the white cell count.
SAA is valuable for monitoring feline inflammatory conditions over time — following flares and remissions of immune-mediated or chronic infectious disease, and judging response to treatment. Its trajectory across a longitudinal record turns a vague sense that a cat is "brighter" into a measurable trend, which is exactly the kind of signal serial testing is designed to reveal.
This marker is defined by species: SAA is the cat's acute-phase protein of choice, standing in for CRP, which is unreliable in cats. (SAA exists in dogs too but CRP is the dog's preferred marker.) So an SAA result belongs to a cat's inflammatory work-up; for a dog, look to CRP. This species split is why the immune panel selects the right marker for each animal.
SAA is measured from a blood sample, reported in mg/L, and results are available quickly — suiting its use for serial monitoring. No special preparation is needed. Read the value against your own report's range and, above all, follow its trend across samples.
A high SAA is a prompt to find and treat the source of inflammation, guided by the clinical picture and the rest of the panel — and then to recheck SAA to confirm the process is settling. In a cat, where illness can be hard to read, its sensitivity makes it an especially useful early and monitoring signal.
